Bottled coffee drinks can be polarizing so we wanted to try the bottled retail espresso drink ourselves this year.
We bought it on the first date we could find it in early September and our team gave it a try.
We purchased the 14 oz version though a 48 oz version is also available.
Serve the drink in a cup filled with ice and we added some more spice.
Then we took a sip.
What does Starbucks unsweetened blonde roast taste like?
Tasting Notes: Pros
The first thing that hits the tongue is cinnamon (even more so after we doused the rim of our glass in cinnamon after the first taste test).
The beverage has a nice color and a smooth mouth feel as it goes down.
The clove leaves a subtle pleasant after taste on the palette after drinking.
We tried ours without food but were definitely craving something off the Starbucks autumn season menu (below) once we took our first sip.
Specifically, we were craving a pumpkin cream cheese muffin.
We didn’t have any whipped cream available but thought that that would be an excellent touch as well.
Tasting Notes: Cons
Although the spices shine through, we’d be lying if we said that the drink was not a bit cloying.
At 42g of sugar per bottle it’s comparable to drinking a Coke or Pepsi and the sweetness can definitely be a bit much.
The lack of fat in the skim milk leaves the drink somewhat unbalanced and flavored very sweetly, but overall the beverage is very drinkable.
Overall we probably would have used whole milk if we were tweaking the recipe, but going sweet for a mass market release is not something we can really fault the company for given the audience.
